About this deal

The special actions, Artifacts, and Monsters of the Week add a lot of character to the game, and fun combinations can result in some exciting game play. When Willow becomes Dark Willow, there’s not a ton of incentive to turn her back to her original form.

Having owned many board games in my 22 years, making plastic holders too small for the cardboard never ceases to annoy me. Each end game had a veritable swarm of monsters on the board chasing down tasty townies for a delicious snack while our avatars tried to put the final beat-down on the big-bad before the Sunnydale cemeteries filled. Also, there are effects triggered at the start of the turn when the Event Card is drawn (again, the effect triggered depends on the symbol of the Event Card).

Do not get me wrong, the game feels complete in of itself, but it does feel like it can handle more without becoming bloated. So, in other words, the Big Bad is as tough as all three monsters of the week combined and then some. The Scooby gang heroes have special abilities that make sense for their characters, and the Sunnydale locations offer thematic abilities, as well. A built in timer (in this case, the Apocalypse Track) ratchets up the tension and, when the timer runs out, the game ends because everyone is dead. You’re fighting a series of timers every round but none of them work to give you any moment of horror or alarm.

Skillful play can mitigate these things to an extent, but there are games where you just get hosed by fate. If you haven't watched through the entirety of both "Buffy" and "Angel," there will most likely be a lot of spoilers.Legendary: Buffy The Vampire Slayer is a semi-co-operative deck-building game for 1–5 players, taking about 30-60 minutes.

Each Big Bad comes with its own specific villain decks, and you can customise the hero deck to contain different Buffy characters. They make distinctions between the villains and their servants, but don't clarifiy whether The Master is bound by all of the vampire rules in the game. That’s like what happens when you take the original design from an idle post-it note and say ‘Screw it, that’ll do’.Knowledgeable players can fill in this gap, but even Buffy fans could have their memory jogged with reminders of memorable moments from the series. Legendary: Buffy The Vampire Slayer has enough strategy to engage players who aren’t familiar with the show, but it’s a far superior experience for fans. It would have been helpful to have a space on the board for this or a handy reference card that can be placed near the board. It also comes with a neoprene playmat which is high quality and makes it easier to keep track of which deck is which.

I found myself wanting to pause the gameplay to check out all the cards (which is possibly not ideal in terms of pacing). As for substance, the game looked designed so that "seasonal expansions" could not only have been possible, but probable.
