About this deal

Part of the second wave of Transformers Hero Mashers basic Action Figures, Rodimus is a non-transforming action figure with ratchet-joints, about six inches tall. Except for a red version of one of the guns, Masterpiece Hot Rodimus's accessories are not included.

Intended to be part of the second wave of the Velocitron Speedia 500 Collection, Autobot Hot Rod was to be a redeco of the Studio Series figure in colors reminiscent of his original 1986 toy release. Hot Rod comes with his Titan Master partner Firedrive (a renamed Firebolt), who fits into his vehicle mode cockpit and transforms into his robot mode head. He was only available in a box set named "Chaos on Velocitron" that includes Quickswitch and Dynamus, Laser Prime and Refractor, Nautica and Parsec, and Fastclash. Speaking of vehicle shells, the "backpack" also blocks the tab hole for display stands unless it's slightly lifted up. The latter can be removed as a handheld weapon (with the sword combined) to form some kind of a pointy bowgun-rifle, or onto the other similarly-molded port on the back of the panel, which creates a better tolerance for the shoulder articulation but with a seemingly less stable connection if it wasn't for the single ratchet on its hinge joint.

He was eventually shot down by Infernocus but survived and joined Optimus's charge on the control chamber, congratulating Sqweeks on his destruction of the enemy gun emplacement. While there are still plenty of paint apps on the figure for the additional detailing, the majority of the body's colour comes from the plastic itself which gives Hot Rod a really clean look and finish. Internationally, it was available in Hong Kong (possibly as a non-exclusive general retail release), at Walmart's subsidiary Asda in the United Kingdom, as a Prisma exclusive in Finland, and as a Walmart exclusive in Mexico. The coin's package is shaped like his chest, and the inside is designed after the Matrix, with the coin as the core, and features Hot Rod's "my actions speak louder than words" motto.

This Autobot received his first action figure in Generation 1 and since then he's been a A to B level character with many toys. This figure was only available in a two-pack with Bumblebee, also under the Autobots Unite subline imprint. Before final production, Hot Rod was originally cast in a pinker plastic to match the color of his animation model (as seen in catalogs at the time, and the Sharkticon commercial), but oddly, he was changed to a less animation-accurate red before release. As Wembly was, in reality, the last living descendant of the ancient Merlin and thus the only one able to wield his Cybertronian staff, Hot Rod became her deep cover bodyguard, spending years disguised as her Citroen and coming to admire her.

Released as part of the Bumblebee Energon Igniters line, Speed Series Hot Rod is a retool of Energon Igniters Speed Barricade and transforms from robot to '80s muscle car, with engineering highly reminiscent of the original 2007 Legends Class Barricade toy. Both vehicles feature opening canopies, though only Hot Rod has any sculpted interior detail of note. After transforming into robot mode, Hot Rod needs to transform back into vehicle in two steps: Push down the button again while clamping the vehicle parts together by hand to make it secure. In further contrast to the common design process for Transformers toys, he (like most of the cast of The Transformers: The Movie) was created for animation first, and had his toy created based on Floro Dery's designs (though said animation designs would be further modified after the toy was completed).

His two 5 mm rifles can be clipped together to form a larger gun with a Titan Master seat, which can be tabbed into Hot Rod's engine block in an homage to where G1 Firebolt could attach. On the United States market, he is only available as a Walmart exclusive, as the "Bonus" figure in a pack with Bumblebee and Soundwave. He does however include Offshoot, a Targetmaster figure, as well as all the other accessories from the Takara release. As the port is 5mm compatible, Hot Rod can mount with other smaller weapons with the same post size, making him an efficient weapon-towing vehicle. As a reference to his Generation 1 namesake, he features a flame tampograph (complete with an Autobot insignia) on his vehicle mode's front hood, as well as a yellow spoiler.
