About this deal

It was not that I no longer missed those close to me, merely that I felt so detached as to be suddenly unaware of what I wanted or cared about outside the immediate realm of Bosnia. This may be the book these wars needed—an angry, confused howl against the obliteration of all we consider humane. I could leer and posture as much as anyone else, roll my shoulders and swagger through stories of megadeath, murder and mayhem; and I could get angry about the poignant tragedy of it all. On the surface, Anthony Loyd has written a book about the Bosnian war, but as the pages flicker by it doesn’t take long to realise that this book is a confession.

Among the wars he reported were the conflicts in Bosnia, Kosovo, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone and Iraq. It is a breathtaking feat of reportage; an uncompromising look at the terrifyingly seductive power of war.For those who have experienced war first hand, it is an intimate and personal endeavor often difficult to explain to their loved ones. I was struck by Anthony’s work and words, experiences, and for me his is an important voice and an important book. I am very excited to learn that Actor Tom Hardy is set to star in a movie based on the Anthony Lloyd book My War Gone by By, I Miss it So. There are those who seek out the world’s hotspots and combat zones, to experience and to report where the rest of us mere mortals would fear to tread.

And beneath the darkness and despair is a keen understanding of the human condition and the desire for “feeling” wherever it may come. Three armies were formed along ethnic/religious grounds: the Army of Republika Srpska(VRS) or Serbs/Protestants on the one side, and the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH) which was largely composed of Bosniaks/Muslims, and the Croat/Catholic forces in the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) on the other side.Improvised claymore mines were attached to their chests, linked to the Croat houses by coils of wire that unraveled slowly with each stop of their robotic progress. And Loyd waxes eloquent on the backblast of his war time, a heroin addiction that begins before his arrival and becomes the only way he can survive his breaks from the fighting. We lived together for a long time,’ he said, looking out of a crack-spangled window, ‘we have no need to fight.

And from this comes remarkable stories that range from those of the ordinary families of Sarajevo trying to preserve some sense of normalcy while under siege to those of creative and flamboyant mid-level commanders of Croatian and Bosnian units as they engineer successful and unsuccessful attacks. Lloyd does not attempt to cover up the worst aspects of the war, so readers should be prepared for some difficult reading. While covering a fire fight a French correspondent who was writing for The Daily Telegraph was wounded by a claymore mine set off by the Croat HVO forces. The former soldier who fled depression and drug addiction in England to cover Europe's bloodiest conflict since the Second World War recounts extraordinary stories of brutality and compassion he recorded while in both Bosnia and Chechnya. I have always been frustrated and furious at the UN's handling of the Balkan wars and this book takes you there.

This harrowing account shows humanity at its worst and best, and is acknowledged as a classic of the genre. These harrowing accounts from the trenches show humanity at its worst and best, through daily tragedies in city streets and mountain villages during Yugoslavia's brutal dissolution. These scenes, and others, give a certain character to the war and its combatants that will not be found in any scholarly work.
