About this deal

It's a bit amazing that Nightbreed even managed to earn a cult following though, as its original theatrical cut was heavily compromised, with distributor 20th Century Fox cutting nearly an hour of material out of the film without Barker's consent, with the cut footage thought to be lost. This version is the most complete version of Barker's film available and has been dubbed The Cabal Cut. There are truly remarkable visual ideas spliced between really bland expositional/dialogue-driven sequences – the kind of generic footage that would’ve never made the cut on an incredibly efficient movie, like Hellraiser .

The original film was full of nice ideas that seemed underdeveloped but the director does a short interview at the start of this version explaining his motives for the director's cut (he states it was butchered by the studio originally) and what wanted to achieve and I think he largely succeeded. Bramesco argued, "They were blind to the subtext of this community as a home for misfits, where the placeless Boone—who doesn't seem all that interested in sex with his torch-singing girlfriend—can find an accepting family.

Barker and cinematographer Robin Vidgeon utilize a lot of reds and oranges, which tends to flatten the darker shots, but, even at their most vivid, these warm hues are not blocky or noisy. Later, after Boone has been captured by the police, new scenes show a press conference with the police chief, as well as Father Ashberry and Boone talking. Lori also kills herself due to not wanting Boone to leave her behind, so he brings her back as one of the Nightbreed. The only realistic complaint I can muster is that some shots have been slightly over-sharpened, creating minor edge haloes.

Barker always loved monsters and felt that "there's a corner of all of us that envies their powers and would love to live forever, or to fly, or to change shape at will. I finally watched the Director's Cut and it's still a messy film but damn it's still such a fun movie.

This new version adds almost an hour that was cut from the theatrical release, including a song sung by Lori, and more animation. Boone leaves Midian with Lori and meets with the remaining Nightbreed in a barn, where he says his goodbyes to Narcisse and promises to find a place where they will be safe. Nightbreed has been released on DVD in various territories, but Scream Factory’s standard edition and collector’s edition Blu-rays are the only HD options, not to mention the first and only releases of the director’s cut version. This group aims to work in close co-operation with the creative people currently restoring the film.

For the first time on home video, you can experience Clive Barker's original director's cut of Nightbreed with over 40 minutes of new footage, all mastered in high definition from the original camera negative! While he never quite achieved the crossover pop culture superstardom that Stephen King has managed to acquire, there's no doubt that Barker is one of the best and most influential horror authors in recent memory. Closer to the climax of Nightbreed, there's a new scene in which Rachel picks up Lori in a car to go find Boone, in the hopes he can save Midian. In the following year, Morgan Creek announced the sale of the domestic rights to its library of 78 films, but the production company plans to retain the TV rights to Nightbreed.

Film enthusiasts can’t resist a good “artist screwed over by studio hacks” story and Nightbreed’s history has turned the concept of a director’s cut into the Holy Grail of its kind.

This was my first time seeing a cut of the film closer to Clive Barkers intentions and it left me wanting more. When it comes to extras, Arrow yet again impresses by making brand new feauturettes for this release.A FL native, Michael is passionate about pop culture, and earned an AS degree in film production in 2012. Friend to Clive and Seraphim, Russel Cherrington borrowed a copy of the footage on the pretense that he missed the Horror Hound screening and wanted to see it for himself. A new petition was created and social networks were used to raise awareness for the extended cut and to encourage producers to release it. Speaking of which, lots of additional creatures are shown inside Midian, showing off previously unseen practical effects.
