About this deal

Betrayal follows the story of Eve, a mother doing everything she can to keep herself and her children alive while in an abusive marriage. A bestselling British novelist, Lesley Pearse’s novels have sold more than ten million copies worldwide.

The plot moves along at a cracking pace and events have a disturbing ring of truth for so many women’s lives in them. The bleakness of her life with Don and her subsequent struggles are lightened not only by her own courage and determination, but by the strength of the other characters in the book, who are a testament to the fundamental good heartedness of most people. Just marred for me by the surprising number of mistakes in the ARC copy I read, which is not usual from this publisher, hence 4 stars rather than 5. Feeling stuck she stayed too long with Don until she decided one day her body has had enough pain and abuse. After one particularly bad beating, and knowing that he is starting to do the same to her son, Olly, Eve plucks up the courage to leave, taking Olly and his sister, Tabby, with her. She heard a faint crack and knew that, once again, her ribs had broken, but even as she wanted to scream out in agony, she felt the heaven-sent wooziness of unconsciousness. After a particularly vicious beating, Eve finds the courage to report him to police and is offered sanctuary at a women’s refuge in far-off Sidmouth in Devon.

Lesley has a reputation for writing gritty, confronting stories that don’t shy away from distressing issues. After one punch too many, Eve plucks up the courage to leave Don, taking their two children with her.I certainly found myself questioning my morals with this book because I am very much one who believes in doing the right thing and without giving too much away Eve does something unforgivable that would usually have me turning against a character however because we have seen what poor Eve has had to endure through her life there was a part of me that excused her for her actions. The betrayal of the title is how Don treats Eve, however, she is so immersed in her one and only long term relationship she believes leaving him would be an act of betrayal of their wedding vows.

Betrayal is the new release from Lesley Pearse where she introduces us to Eve who has been the victim of domestic abuse and it doesn’t stop at her because Don has raised his hand to their son now too. I don't actually have anything bad to say about it, these just aren't my favourite books of all time! The beatings that Eve took are not the only shocking thing to happen and I didn't see the other thing coming so that was a complete surprise.

I felt so sorry for Eve and her children but I loved how her character evolved as the story progressed and she started to get more confident in building a new life for herself. Setting up a new life for herself and her children isn't easy for Eve but with sheer grit and determination she takes them out of poverty and into a more settled existence except that Eve is burdened by a dreadful secret which overshadows her future happiness. Long before I began blogging I was a fan of Lesley Pearse’s books and I have reviewed several since my blog was established in 2015.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I’ve got about 100 pages left and I am honestly waiting for it to turn my one star into a five star. The impact of constant change and uncertainty in Lesley's early years is reflected in one of the recurring themes in her books: what happens to those who are emotionally damaged as children. I didn’t mean to hurt you,’ he said almost as soon as he’d attacked her, and he got a bag of ice to put on her already swelling eye.
