About this deal

The front face is angled to direct the sound, so you won’t need to use monitor stands. Also, you can remove the cloth panel to expose the drivers. However, keep in mind that the panels help to protect the drivers and diffuse the sound. Edifier 1850DB

As with most bookshelf speakers they are a decent small to medium size and will fit on just about any shelf or ledge, as the name would suggest! The RMS is powered by 60W and allows the speaker to reach loud volumes around the 100dB mark before distortion becomes noticeable.

Customer reviews

Do you recommend these or Presonus Eris 3.5 for the same price (around 100 EUR)? Of course, Eris is more professional, but R1850DB also has a pretty smooth AFR curve, and also it has more features, and, it seems, it has biamp (separate amp channels for tweeters / bass) while Eris 3.5 does not (Eris 5 does). The Edifier R1850DB comes with a 4-inch woofer that manages low and most midrange frequencies. Also, it uses a 0.75-inch tweeter to handle the high ends. This is a standard configuration with many studio monitors. Sturdy spring-loaded posts accept banana plugs for solid cable connections to help keep up the premium feel of the R1700BT.

Let’s start with the style of the R1850DB which with the grill on looks like any other Bookshelf or desktop monitor. Nothing to see here. Take off the grill and things get a whole lot better with the woofer and tweeter exposed. It makes for a more modern take and mounting the speakers on their own board sets it apart from the cabinet. Maybe because they didn’t engineer the remote but took an existing design and just printed their own label? If a sub out option is not a big concern the R1280DB could be a good choice for you. It retains many of the features of the R1850DB but at an even cheaper price point. The Edifier R1850DB delivers subtle but noticeable improvements over the R1700BT, mainly due to the extra power and the slightly larger size. The subwoofer output is a big improvement over the R1700BT. Having a subwoofer paired with this speaker means you can take your audio setup to a whole other level. The R1850DB justifies the higher price tag with strategic upgrades such as the optical/coaxial inputs, subwoofer outputs, a better remote, and subtle design changes such as the glossy piano finish which gives a more premium look.

These are perfect. They look good too. They're a decent size, not too big and not too small, and they have settings for volume and bass. Positioning the speakers on a bookshelf or anywhere else should not be a problem. The reason for this is that the Active to Passive speaker cable is 500 cm long (that’s five metres!). This makes it really easy to place the individual speakers far apart. As for the output level, these speakers can get seriously loud. What’s somewhat surprising considering the price is that they don’t distort even at higher output volumes. The sound quality remains undistorted and smooth, although the balance will shift towards the upper end of the frequency spectrum. For music production and mixing, it is recommended to use lower volumes. A versatile speaker is a great addition to your studio or home audio setup. The Edifier R1700BT and R1850DB provide outstanding sound quality and proficient noise correction. These are functional and productive studio monitors that you can use for your day-to-day tasks.

Choosing what is right for you depends on your needs. If you just need a set of speakers to do the job PC speakers are fine. They perform well for gaming, TV, and general listening. Active bookshelf speakers are much maligned in the audiophile world but anyone doing so doesn’t quite get the point. For a lot of people the world of pairing, matching, and even setting up speakers with amplifiers is a pain in the rear end. Believe it or not people like just being able to plug something into the wall and start listening. I’m not going to sit here and argue about active vs passive speakers. I’m going to review this set of R1850DB for what they are, active powered speakers with an in-built amp. Just like the R1700BT, the 19mm silk dome tweeter delivers the similar pristine high that we are used to.
